The 2024 Beyond Education Fund Scholarship Recipient is Edward Davis!

Jenesis Software and the C.A.R.E. Team are excited to announce the recipient of the 2024 Beyond Education Fund Scholarship: Edward Davis III, the son of one of our software trainers, Terri Laurant-Reno. Edward is a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, LA. He embodies the values of hard work, perseverance, and compassion, making him a worthy recipient of this scholarship.

In his essay, Edward provides a candid and thoughtful perspective on the life of a college student. He shares his experiences balancing academics, financial challenges, and a drive to succeed, offering an authentic glimpse into his determination and character.

Edward’s Essay:

My name is Edward Davis, III. My mother, Terri Laurant-Reno, informed me of the opportunity your company is offering to college students. I am in my fourth year of college, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. The criteria for choosing the winner should be based on the “college student.” Now the question is, what is a “college student”?

A college student is one who has worked hard to get where they are and is focused on not only finishing college but also making their parents proud in the process. A college student is one who, even though still dependent on their parents for most things, can still be independent and help themselves also. This is a person who is well-rounded but also grounded in why they are in school. A person who doesn’t mind being kind to the student who seems out of place or offering to tutor the classmate who seems a little behind. I fit that description of “a college student.”

My mother has always instilled in me to work hard, show compassion for others, and finish strong, whether that be academically, athletically, or in life. Through hard work, I have managed to obtain scholarships, but they still aren’t enough. Though I am fortunate to have the support of my parents, who cover the difference in my tuition, pay for my apartment, and afford me the luxury of a car, there are still costs that I did not foresee. I work summers and holiday breaks to save money for the school year, focusing strictly on my classes while in school. Therefore, I strategically plan my spending. Even with all the above mentioned, I still find myself limited to ramen noodles some nights. Don’t get me wrong, my parents would not like me to eat ramen noodles, and I’m sure they would gladly help with funding my grocery store adventures. However, they do so much already, I prefer to “tough it out” and not ask.

This brings me to what I would use the funds towards—meals and miscellaneous expenses. On average, when I go to the grocery store, I spend about $100-130. For a college student on a very limited budget, $100-130 over a 12-14-week semester adds up. Add to that, gas and maintenance of my car (gas, tires, etc.), and just a little extra help would go a long way for a guy just trying to finish strong.

I am sure you will have a lot of great candidates, and I wish us all the best in college and in this process. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Edward L. Davis, III,
